The Sacral Chakra: Svadhisthana
You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.
—Maya Angelou
Chakras are organizational centers for the reception, assimilation, and transmission of life-force energy. They are the stepping stones between heaven and earth.

The sacral chakra, also known as Svadhisthana in Sanskrit, is the second chakra, and its located in the pelvic area of the body. It affects the hips, inner thighs, knees, sacrum, lower abdomen, sexual organs, bladder, the bowels, the kidneys, and the adrenal glands.
"Sva” means “Self”. Svadhisthana" translates to "one's own place or home". So, "Svadhisthana" can be interpreted as the chakra that represents the inner sanctuary or dwelling place of our inner self. “Svadhisthana is the dwelling place of the self and the home of sweetness and enjoyment of life” (Gabrielle Harris).
The sacral chakra is a vital energy center in the body, symbolized by a six-petal lotus flower. Each petal represents qualities or states of mind—such as anger, jealousy, desire, pride, hatred, and greed—that must be integrated and transcended to fully activate this chakra. By working through these aspects, we unlock the chakra’s potential for creativity, emotional depth, and a balanced sense of self.
The word emotion comes from the Latin word movere, or energy in motion. Just as this chakra is about moving with grace and ease throughout life, it is also about emotional flow, or our ability to let inner storms arise, be seen and move through us (Gabrielle Harris).
Associated with the color orange, the sacral chakra radiates warmth, enthusiasm, and emotional expression. This vibrant color encourages the free flow of energy, promoting both creativity and emotional well-being. The sacral chakra emphasizes the importance of engaging with life fully, using our senses to explore and appreciate the world around us. Sensuality plays a key role here, involving the mindful enjoyment of sensory experiences, such as savoring a meal, feeling the warmth of sunlight, or appreciating the texture of a soft fabric. This sensory awareness helps us stay present and connected, enriching our everyday experiences.
Sensuality differs from sexuality, although the two are often linked. While sexuality relates to our sexual energy and desires, sensuality is about appreciating the world through our senses. It doesn’t need to be sexual to be meaningful or fulfilling; it’s about cultivating an awareness and appreciation of the present moment. In the context of the sacral chakra, both aspects are important, but the focus is on experiencing life fully through all senses, not just sexual expression.
The sacral chakra also encourages emotional balance and a healthy relationship with our feelings, particularly those related to pleasure, desire, and intimacy. Symbolized by water, this chakra promotes fluidity and adaptability in navigating life’s challenges. It highlights the significance of establishing healthy boundaries, mutual respect, and genuine connections in relationships, fostering a sense of wholeness and integration.
To activate and balance the sacral chakra, yoga poses that open the hips and encourage fluid movement are particularly beneficial. Poses like Butterfly (Baddha Konasana), Goddess (Utkata Konasana), Pigeon (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana), Frog (Mandukasana) or Half Frog, and Bridge (Setu Bandhasana) help to release tension in the hips, allowing energy to flow freely through the sacral region.
Integrating somatic movement can be highly effective to enhance the effects of these poses. Somatic movement involves tuning into the body’s sensations and allowing natural, intuitive movements to emerge. For the sacral chakra, this could include gentle, flowing movements of the hips, such as pelvic circles or undulations, which mirror the water element associated with this chakra. These movements help to release stored emotions, promote flexibility, and awaken the creative energy within.
Mantra
Chanting "VAM" helps to activate and balance the Svadhisthana chakra, promoting emotional well-being, enhancing creativity, and supporting a healthy expression of desires and relationships. This mantra is often used in meditation and yoga practices aimed at unlocking creative potential, fostering emotional balance, and connecting with one's inner flow and passion.
Affirmations
Affirmations work by reprogramming the subconscious mind, replacing negative or limiting beliefs with positive, empowering ones. By focusing on affirmations that resonate with the sacral chakra, we can address specific areas of concern, such as self-worth, emotional expression, and relationship dynamics.
I love and enjoy my body without judgement
I embrace my creativity and sensuality
I am open to the flow of emotions
I deserve to feel pleasure and joy
I am in touch with my emotions and express them freely
I have healthy boundaries
I am able to give and receive pleasure
These positive statements help to clear blockages and open the sacral chakra, allowing energy to flow more freely. By regularly affirming positive beliefs, we can transform our relationship with the sacral chakra and, in turn, with ourselves.
