In order to flourish above, one must be firmly rooted below.

The image below illustrates the seven chakras. In the coming weeks, we'll delve into each chakra, starting with the Root Chakra at the base, and exploring one chakra per week.
Chakras, originating from ancient Indian spiritual traditions, are energy centers in the body, with the word "chakra" meaning "wheel" or "disk" in Sanskrit. There are seven main chakras, each associated with different aspects of physical, emotional, and spiritual life, aligning along the spine from its base to the crown of the head.
The root chakra, or Muladhara chakra, is the first of the seven primary chakras in the body’s energy system and is located at the base of the spine near the tailbone. It encompasses the legs, feet, tailbone, bowels, blood, and bones. Associated with the earth element, it governs basic survival instincts, security, stability, and is linked to our ancestors, family, and fundamental needs. The energy of the root chakra helps us feel grounded and stable.
As the foundation of our physical and emotional well-being, a balanced root chakra fosters feelings of safety, self-sufficiency, and a strong connection to the physical world. When imbalanced, it can lead to anxiety, fear, and physical issues such as colon pain, sciatica, and lower back problems. Psychologically, Muladhara shapes our sense of self, rooted in our early relationships with primary caregivers.
The color red is often associated with the root chakra, symbolizing its grounding energy.
The root chakra is crucial for stability and security, serving as the base for the other chakras. When it is balanced, we feel grounded, comfortable, and secure both in our bodies and in the world. We have a deep sense of having enough and being enough. Conversely, an imbalance can lead to emotional disturbances like excessive worry and anger, as well as physical issues, underscoring the importance of maintaining its harmony for overall well-being.
The Muladhara Chakra is represented by a lotus with four petals. Inside the lotus, there is often a yellow square, representing the element Earth. The square symbolizes stability, foundation, and groundedness. Within the square, there is typically a downward-pointing triangle, symbolizing the feminine energy, the flow of energy downwards, and grounding.
Mantra
The mantra associated with the Muladhara chakra, or root chakra, is "LAM." This Sanskrit seed syllable, or "bija mantra," is chanted to activate, balance, and energize the root chakra. Chanting "LAM" helps to strengthen the foundation of your energy system, fostering a sense of security, rootedness, and a strong connection to the Earth.

This class starts with a grounding dance focusing on squats, which focus on the lower body and enhance stability and strength, supporting root chakra energy. Some of the yoga poses on this video are: Mountain Pose (Tadasana), Chair Pose (Utkatasana), Warrior 2 (Virabhadrasana 2), Side Angle (Utthita Parsvakonasana), Triangle (Trikkonasana), Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana), Child's Pose (Balasana), and Supported Fish (Matsyasana). These poses are grounding and help stabilize the root chakra. We end class by chanting a short version of the Ganesh Mantra, which can be used as a tool for cultivating qualities like inner strength, stability, focus, and resilience. These qualities are important for maintaining a balanced and grounded state of being. You can find more details on the Ganesh Mantra on the June 3rd post.
